How do you get to Pig Island from Koh Samui?

Pig Island, also written Koh Madsum, is a small island about 4 km off the south coast of Koh Samui, in the Gulf of Thailand, right next to Koh Tan. Our tour page states that it can only be reached by boat: there is no bridge and no scheduled public ferry. Every visitor arrives by speedboat or longtail boat from Koh Samui, usually on a trip that pairs Pig Island with a snorkeling stop at Koh Tan.

Which boat options are there?

• Shared speedboat day trip (join-in). The lowest price per person: you share the boat with other guests. ฿1,490 per adult and ฿1,270 per child, morning or afternoon departure, 5 to 6 hours in total.
• Private longtail charter, half day. The whole boat is yours: a traditional longtail to Koh Tan and Pig Island, morning or afternoon. ฿6,250 for a group of 1 to 5 people, ฿8,550 for 6 to 10.
• Private speedboat charter, for bigger groups. A speedboat for your group only, up to 35 people. From ฿13,090 for 1 to 10 people.

How long does the boat ride take?

The speedboat crossing takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes each way from the pier. On the private longtail the first island is reached after roughly 20 to 25 minutes. Trips run daily, subject to weather and sea conditions.

Can you get to Pig Island without a tour?

We cannot answer this one with facts. We hold no information on boat owners who sell independent trips, whether they take walk-ups, or what they charge. What we can say is that, according to our tour page, no scheduled public ferry runs to the island.

How do you get from your hotel to the boat?

You do not need a taxi. On the shared speedboat trip, hotel pickup and drop-off are included from the main areas: Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut, Maenam and Nathon. Your exact pickup time depends on your hotel and is confirmed on your voucher. On the private charter, pickup is around 08:00 to 08:30 for the morning trip or around 12:30 to 13:00 for the afternoon trip, in a private air-conditioned vehicle.

On the shared speedboat trip the 50 THB per person Pig Island entrance fee is already in the price, so you pay nothing extra on the island. The price also covers snorkeling gear, shared kayaks, a Thai lunch with drinking water, life jackets and basic accident insurance. Towels, extra drinks and tips for the crew are not included.

What should you bring?

Swimwear and a towel, reef-safe sunscreen and a hat, sunglasses and flip-flops, a waterproof bag or phone case, and some cash for extra drinks or souvenirs.
