Pig Island Koh Samui: What the Trip Is Like
By KohTrip · 23 October 2026
What is the latest on Pig Island from Koh Samui?
We cannot give you a news bulletin here, and we would rather say so than guess. What we can do is describe how our Pig Island trip runs, so you know what a visit involves.
Our trip is a shared speedboat day out from Koh Samui to Koh Tan and Pig Island, which is also called Koh Madsum. You snorkel, have a Thai lunch, meet the pigs on the beach and paddle a kayak in your free time. It takes 5 to 6 hours including pickup and drop-off at your hotel.

Where is Pig Island and how do you get there?
Pig Island lies about 4 km off the south coast of Koh Samui, right next to Koh Tan, in the Gulf of Thailand. It is a small island and can only be reached by boat. There is no bridge and no scheduled public ferry.
On our trip we collect you from your hotel, drive you to the pier and give you a short introduction from the crew. The speedboat then takes about 20–30 minutes to reach the islands. Your exact pickup time depends on your hotel and the departure you choose, and it is confirmed on your voucher.
- Pickup areas include Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut, Maenam and Nathon
- Two departures a day, morning and afternoon
- You share the boat with other guests
- If you prefer, you can tick a box at checkout to arrive at the meeting point yourself

What do you actually do on the day?
The trip follows a simple order. First comes Koh Tan, where you snorkel over a shallow coral reef. We provide the mask and snorkel. Then you move on to Pig Island for a Thai lunch, swimming and beach time.
After that there is free time for kayaking with the shared equipment, photos and sea views. The speedboat then brings you back to Samui and you are dropped at your hotel. Conditions at sea vary from day to day, so we do not promise any particular view or water condition.

Do the pigs really roam free, and are they treated well?
Yes, the pigs live on the beach at Pig Island and walk free. You can walk up to them on the sand and feed them by hand if you like. We cannot promise exactly what the pigs will do on any given visit.
On our trip the pigs are never made to swim or perform for photos. Visits are short and you move at your own pace. The pigs are friendly and used to visitors, and we ask you to keep it relaxed for them.
Is the trip suitable for beginners and families?
Yes. You do not need any snorkelling experience. The reef at Koh Tan is shallow and calm, and life jackets come in all sizes. Koh Tan is often called Coral Island, and its reef is among the closest healthy ones to Koh Samui.
Adults and children aged 12 and over are the main group, and children aged 4 to 11 and infants aged 0 to 3 are also welcome. One thing to know: speedboat tours are not recommended during pregnancy.
What should you bring, and what are the alternatives?
Pack light and keep your phone dry. Our list for the day is below.
If a shared speedboat is not what you are looking for, we run other trips too. The Jet Ski Safari 3h Koh Tan and Pig Island is a guided jet ski ride to the same two islands with snorkelling. The Jet Ski Safari 4h Five Islands is a longer guided jet ski ride with beach time on Koh Tan and snorkelling at Pig Island.
