Koh Samui vs Koh Tao: Which Is Better for a Day?
By KohTrip · 21 October 2026
Is Koh Tao better than Koh Samui?
It depends on what you want from the day. We can only speak about what we do on our trips, which is snorkeling and island time, so that is how we compare the two.
For the best snorkeling, we would send you to Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan. They have the clearest water and the best coral reefs in the Gulf of Thailand. For the easiest snorkeling, we would keep you near Koh Samui, where the reefs are close and the water is calm and shallow.

What makes Koh Tao worth the boat ride?
Koh Tao is one of Thailand's top snorkeling destinations. On our trip you snorkel at least two sessions around the island, over clear coral reefs with colourful tropical fish. There is a chance of spotting turtles, though we cannot promise any wildlife sighting.
Our guides choose the best sites on the day for safety and clarity. Well-known spots such as Mango Bay and the Japanese Garden are part of the plan, and Shark Bay is on the itinerary too. Whether you can get in the water there depends on conditions that day, and if it is not right the crew changes the snorkeling spot.

What is the Koh Nang Yuan part of the day like?
Koh Nang Yuan is known for its three-sandbar beach. We give you free time there to relax on the sand and swim in shallow, sheltered water.
If you like, you can hike up to the famous viewpoint. It takes around 15 minutes, and the trail is steep in parts with steps and rocks, so bring light shoes or sandals with grip. The island has its own rules: no plastic bottles, limited smoking zones and set paths to the viewpoint.

How long does the trip from Koh Samui take?
This is the main trade-off. The speedboat crossing takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours each way, depending on sea conditions, so this is a full-day trip.
We collect you from your hotel in the morning, you check in at the pier for a light breakfast and a safety briefing, and then you board the speedboat. Lunch is a Thai meal at a restaurant on Koh Tao. In the afternoon we ride back to Koh Samui and drop you at your accommodation in the early evening.
- Full day, shared speedboat
- Hotel pickup and drop-off by air-conditioned minivan
- Mask, snorkel and life jacket for every stop

When are the reefs near Koh Samui the better choice?
The reefs around Koh Tan and Pig Island (Koh Madsum) are only 20–30 minutes away. They sit in calm, shallow water of roughly 2–4 metres. That makes them easier for young children, nervous swimmers or anyone who wants a half-day plan.
So choose Koh Tao for the best snorkeling of your stay, and choose Koh Tan for the easiest. Both are good days out, they are just different ones.
Who should think twice about the Koh Tao trip?
The trip suits confident swimmers and people who love snorkeling and are comfortable on a speedboat. You do not need snorkeling experience, because the spots around Koh Tao suit beginners. It is less ideal for very small children or anyone who dislikes choppy seas.
The fitness level is moderate: walking on sand, steps and rocks at the viewpoint, and climbing in and out of the boat by ladder. We do not recommend speedboat tours for pregnant guests or people with serious back or neck problems, because of possible bumps on the waves.
If that sounds like too much, we also run a Pig Island speed boat trip with snorkeling at Koh Tan's reefs, and an Angthong Marine Park big-boat cruise. Our other days out include a half-day elephant sanctuary visit and an advanced ATV expedition for confident riders.
